Pre production process - preparation for shooting

Pre production process- preparation for shooting. In the pre production process, you prepare and design every needy things that will give you the clarity for the production and post-production process.

Pre production process

Steps of learning in Pre production process

Let's understand importance of pre production process clearly

  • Pre-production process – pre is a prefix means before, the production process is the shooting process in film making, means something that happens before shooting consider as pre-production process.
  • The pre-production process generally there to help you to gain clarity over your future planning for shooting or production process.
  • Now the question is does it really necessary? the answer is, not really, pre-production is only a process to gain clarity over your planning for shooting, if without it you can do it there is no need for a pre-production process for you.

Story, Types of stories, What is a story and how does it born ?

  • The story is the first step in the pre-production process.
  • Based on the story other preparations happened.
  • A story is a form of expression of life with various conflicts and situations.
  • A Story born from the writer’s own life experiences and the imaginations or from a factual event.
  • The way of a writer’s writing finds two ways/forms –1. Fictional way of story/Fictional story form, 2. Non-fictional way of story/Non-fictional story form.
  • Whatever life experience that you have gathered till now if you add your imagination to it, it finds a fictional way of story form. So fictional story form is based upon a writer’s imagination.
  • If it’s based upon a factual event, belongs to a particular time zone and a writer didn’t create it with his/her imaginations, then that kind of story form is called a non-fictional story form.

How does a writer create a story ?

  • When it comes to the non-fictional way of story form we don’t need to create that because it’s a factual event. So the story is already there.
  • In a fictional way of story form, we need to create situations and characters, through combine all the situations and connect with them with different characters, a writer does create a story.
  • The situations that are created by a writer is the amalgamation of his/her own life experiences and imaginations.
  • Yes, your life experiences are very much involved within your imaginations because you can’t imagine something which is not in your experience yet, imagination is just a great possibility to enhance your life experience mentally (positively or negatively that’s up to you). Sounds confusing, doesn’t it?
  • Ok, let’s understand first the life experiences of a writer- a writer doesn’t have any kind of different life experiences as compared to other human beings. Same peacefulness, anger, sadness, fear, happiness, stress, etc, everything is as same as others.
  • The only thing that makes everybody different is perception. The quality of our life experience determines the quality of our perception and the way we perceive based on that we imagine.
  • We gather our life experiences and perceive anything through five sense organs ( eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin ), and four ways of activities(physical activity, mental activity, emotional activity, and energy-based activity), with these, whatever we perceive or life experiences gather based on that we imagine.
  • And the way a writer perceives and imagine, those perceptions and imaginations finds different expressions of stories, doesn’t it?
  • Like we all are different from each other physically and mentally, likewise, all of our perceptions are different from each other, when perception is different our imagination has to be different from each other.
  • Because of that every human being perceives in a different way, imagines in a different way, and of course expresses our perceptions and imaginations are also will be found in different ways.
  • So does a story writer also perceive and imagine in his/her own way, and those perceptions and imaginations find an expression of story form which is different from others (not in every way but in many ways ).
  • Perceptions could be similar some time but definitely not the same. Though perception is different from each other we can divide our perceptions into two parts – 1. Truthful perception ( conscious perception ) 2. Untruthful perceptions( unconscious perception ).
  •  By the way, our perceptions are determined by our choice of life experiences or by our nature. ( choice of life experiences means we consciously or unconsciously choose which way to go, like frustration or peace which life experience you want, you choose it either consciously or unconsciously, and naturally means you have some natural qualities though if you wish you can change your nature according to your necessity, we will discuss human nature impacts to our story later).
  • Now, about creating a story with words and sentences – we already know words come from our perception towards anything and our own life experiences.
  • So if the perception can be divided into two parts then words are also can be divided into two parts, 1. Truthful words, 2. Untruthful words. It’s confusing until you see the examples within a story. Don’t worry it will be given.
  • A sentence is the combination of words, but what makes those sentences are meaningful and valuable for the situation that you are creating is the combination of meaningful and valuable words.
  • And what makes the story meaningful and valuable is – the meaningful and valuable words and sentences according to the situations. It feels like a pain in the head, doesn’t it ?
  • And the way a writer perceives and imagine, those perceptions and imaginations finds different expressions of stories, doesn’t it?
  • As a writer choosing words and decorate them to build a story is a great responsibility, because every word that you’re writing are going to create an impact on the readers.
  • So as a writer it’s your duty that every word has to be and must be in such a way so that when a reader read it, it creates an impact to the reader for enhance the quality of their life rather than diminish the quality of their life.
  • Don’t forget to be truthful at any cost, what is meaningful and valuable for each and every writer could be debatable, but trying to make an impact in a truthful way can’t be debatable. Actually, it doesn’t need to.
  • There are only five ways to represent truth or anyone’s truthfulness 1. In a beautiful way. 2. In a more beautiful way. 3. In a bitter way. 4. In an ugly way. 5. In an uglier way. And what is beautiful, bitter, and ugly could be subjective for different writers.
  • Though the representation of truthfulness could be beautiful or could be ugly according to our perception of course because the representation of something is always subjective. But Truthfulness is always beautiful for you and the people around you.
  • If you’re an Indian and a writer or any way related to theater or film making, you might have heard about “Natyashastra or Rasa theory”. Based upon this you can create and decorate your story and film.
  • Writers, poets, theatrical artists, music directors, singers, dancers, and filmmakers of India very much know the value of “Natyashastra and Rasa theory” and they use it according to their necessity.

How Natyashastra’s Rasa theory is important to create and decorate a story ?

Rasa literally translates as juice, like every juice gives us a certain kind of taste, with a deep understanding of the various form of different life experiences of human beings the writer of the Natyashastra  “Bharat muni” gives 8 rasas.

Simply means on what rasa you’ll get what kind of taste (life experience) or a particular taste(life experience) is belongs to which rasa.

Later on, the other 3 rasas (shanti rasa, bhakti rasa and batsalya rasa ) are evolved which are part of the shringaar rasa but have tremendously uniqueness, that’s why along with the time they were used separately.

1. Shringaar Rasa -

Anything that is beautiful, beautiful and ecstatically beautiful, and gives us the taste of beautiful life experiences, belongs to this rasa. This rasa is also called as king of all rasas.

11. Bhakti Rasa -

This rasa gives us the taste of love and devotion towards a deity or someone or something else, The life experiences which are connected with love and devotion towards anyone or anything comes under this rasa.

In this entire world, nothing could happen beyond these expressions of life, no story or film making happened yet are beyond from these life experiences.

Simply not because I watched all the movies in this world but simply because everything is within these rasas. And every single rasa has its own universe, they don’t have any particular limit, they are limitless, how much may you perceive the knowledge within it, these are never going to end because there is no end.

[ using all these rasas you can easily make a story and if you already have a story, you can decorate the story the way it needs,  before start filmmaking. ]

How a story is important for film making ?

Story is the base/foundation of the film making. It is as important as a base is important for a building and a root is important for a tree. If we go more deeper, then the writer is the base of the story, like earth is the base of any building’s base or base of a root of any tree.

Preparation of film making after collecting a story.

1. Shot and Importance of a short -

  • In film making Shot means, capturing or shooting something or someone without a cut. After a cut that’s another shot until another cut.

Why do we even need a shot in Filmmaking ?

  • Film means it’s in a way visual treatment of the story form. And the story contains many different situations.
  • To express those situations in a visual media expression we shoot them as scenes (one after another), and a scene can’t be possible without a shot or combinations of many shots.
  • It means shot is the base platform of the shooting.
  • Without shot, Filmmaking can’t possible. Because without a shot there is no concept of shooting.

2. Scene -

  • A scene is born from a shot or a combination of more than one shot.
  • A scene is basically based upon two important factors- 1. Time 2. Location.
  • These two changes mean a scene changes to another scene. That’s the basic idea.

3. Script -

  • The script is a detailed description of the story.
  • Every character’s and every situation’s description happens here.

4. Screenplay -

  • The screenplay is a detailed visual description of the story.
  • A screenplay writer decides what is going to play on the screen.
  • The preparation for what will play on the screen is the screenplay.

5. Storyboard -

A storyboard is the visual board representation of the story.

What is the difference between story, script and screenplay ?

  • Where the story is the base and script is the detailed description of the story and the screenplay writing is the detailed visual description of the story.
  • Sometimes it’s confusing to understand the distinct difference between a story, a script, and a screenplay.
  • It happens simply because they based upon the same story form and look similar in many ways. But still, all these platforms are distinctly different and unique from each other.
  • Like we confuse with twins or with earphones which one to left and which one to right and with wearing socks right and left confusion, confusion happens in our lives in many different ways, but confusion also leads to questions, questions lead to answers and answers gives us the knowledge. So the confusion is not a that bad thing, isn’t it?

What is the sameness within a story, script, screenplay and storyboard ?

Story is the sameness.

Questions and Answers.

It ( film making ) can be only for entertainment, but in my views it should be for both entertainment and education, again, it can be for specific age group but in my views it should be for all age group.

Because all the explanation here is just my own view towards film making, you may or may not want this kind of explanation, if you want to see other form of explanation when it comes to film making then there are four platforms where you might love to learn about film making.

These four platforms are

 1.Youtube ( Completely Free ).

 2. Film making Books.

 3. Udemi online courses ( Paid Courses ).

 4. Skillshare online courses ( Paid Courses ).

Well, doing business properly also is an artistic approach, every action that we perform has a certain artistic approach attached to it, how much mature and skillful we are is the only question ? As we all know maturity and skillfulness comes with our own experiences.

Though film making is an artistic platform it also needs an proper economical management to work seamlessly with so many artistic people and leadership. Art definitely comes first but economical needs and management can not be ignored.

So if film making is an artistic platform then business is also an artistic platform, I don’t find both can be conflicting with each other until and unless they are against human well being.

If your wealth means money then answer is definitely yes. Simply because it is also related with the business platform, so your expectation related to money would be there too. But where does that money comes from ? From the society or from the audience lives with in the society who watches your movies, right ?

If your film making contribute to the society for human well being then it will make the entire society to become prosperous and wealthy not only you or your film making, the only concern is, to make a film you need money, to recover that you also need to generate money after release it, though there is always a possibility of profit or loss.

If we look at it an another view I think the real wealth is exist with in you and that wealth is the real and honest artistic nature that you have, if you miss that in the name of wealth you only have money but with the cost of losing the real wealth.

It is like you will get a gold plate at the cost of losing your senses, now how worthwhile that deal will be you can use your common sense. Money adds certain sweetness or headache to your way of living that’s for sure ( depends upon your way of usage and living ).

If you use money to increase sweetness to your life it helps also if you use to increase headache still it helps as money does not have discriminatory power, the way you use it, it increases the quality of it that’s it, not just the way you use it but also the way you are choosing to have it also determines the quality of your life or the standard of your living.
